Les and Chris have been married since 1974. Les, a veteran NFL coach, is President and CEO of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), the largest Christian sports organization in America. Les and Chris have been involved with FCA since 1974 in a variety of roles between them including camp clinician, coach, donor and speaker at national conventions, summer camps and coach and spouses' weekend marriage retreats. Both have served on FCA's National Board of Trustees. Les is also a retired Colonel in the United States Marine Corps Reserves.
A graduate of Kansas University, Les had a 32-year football coaching career, on both the college and professional level. His career began in 1972 as an assistant coach at Colorado University. His NFL career started with the San Francisco 49ers in 1978. His coaching experience includes serving as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings in 1984, offensive coach for the New England Patriots during their 1985 Super Bowl season, and offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, whom he helped guide to the 2000 Super Bowl. His autobiography One Yard Short: Turning Your Defeats Into Victories was published in 2006. The title is derived from the final play in the 2000 Super Bowl.
Chris is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. In her years as a coach's wife, Chris was active in NFL charities and several women's ministries. She continues to minister to coaches and athletes, and their families in the couples' new role with FCA. The Steckels, who reside in suburban Kansas City, are the parents of three: Christian (married to the former Christi Brown) and Lesley, both graduates of Baylor University, and Luke, soon to graduate from Princeton University. |
